While one hopes that these resources will always be available, in the case of a major disaster. Telephone service could be disrupted for hours or emergency services could be unable to help all those who need it, which is why the city of Los Altos urges residents to do what they can to protect themselves and their families from injuries and their homes from needless harm. For one, residents should prepare to be without help for the first 72 hours after an emergency. Officials urge creating an action plan for your family and your workplace to ensure safety. Safety experts also recommend creating a kit with food, water and supplied to help you in case of an emergency. Here’s how to prepare your family in five steps:
1. Discuss with your family the disasters that are most likely to happen. The ones most likely to occur in Los Altos include fires, severe storms, earthquakes, hazardous spills and flooding.
2. Train your family members. Show everyone how to use a fire extinguisher and how house utilities should be shut off. Take first aid classes if you need to. Everyone should know these things because any one of you might be separated or hurt during an emergency.
3. Assemble disaster supplies in a 72-hour emergency kit. The kit should include enough water, food, medication and clothing to last every family member 72 hours.
4. Identify in-state and out-of-state emergency numbers and have a copy ready in the kit and by your phone. If local phone service goes out, out-of-state numbers will come in handy for relaying messages.
5. Maintain your family’s readiness. Review your plan one a year and conduct drills.
